There has often been some argument among the rank and file of the Roman Catholic Church about women of authority, but this week, the dismissal of a female referee has raised questions about discrimination against women in sports. At a Topeka, Kansas High School, basketball referee Michelle Cambell was told she was not allowed to officiate a men’s basketball game solely because she was a woman.

Before leaving office, Lawrence’s outgoing mayor, Mike Rundle, announced to supporters that he is gay, in large part, he said, because of the recent statewide vote in support of an amendment to the Kansas constitution banning gay marriage. The Human Rights Campaign has condemned the passage of a state constitutional amendment in Kansas that defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman - denying same sex couples the rights and protections of marriage and possibly even civil unions and other protections. Kansas now becomes the 17th state to explicitly amend its state constitution to ban marriage rights to same-sex couples.

HRC Lauds Kansas City Council For Passing Domestic Partner Benefits

The Human Rights Campaign applauded the Kansas City Council for passing domestic partner benefits for unmarried city employees. The 11-1 vote establishes a domestic partner registry for city residents and allows for city employees to take family and medical leave for their domestic partners.
